Statement

I established my art practice and studio, Art Side of the Moon, as a place of healing, a sanctuary where I can escape the chaos of the world and delve into the depths of my imagination. My art reflects this inner world as I find visual expression for my thoughts, feelings, and experiences. I employ a diverse range of materials and techniques to bring my visions to life. From traditional mediums like acrylic and oil to unconventional elements like found objects and sentimental objects from my past, I explore the limitless possibilities of artistic expression. Each piece is a blend of realism and abstraction, employing bold colors and loose, gestural brushstrokes.  I often integrate my written work into my visual art, using poetry and prose to add layers of meaning and depth to my compositions. By combining words and images, I aim to create a more immersive and thought-provoking experience for the viewer. My work delves into the complexities of mental health, domestic violence advocacy, and personal healing. Through my art, I challenge societal norms and embrace alternative perspectives. I have a passion for helping others and I believe in the power of art to inspire, to heal, and to transform. I find my voice through my art and hope to inspire others to find a voice as well. My work is intended to connect with the viewer on deep levels that only art can express.

Biography

Skye Elizabeth James is a contemporary artist whose work delves into the complexities of mental health, domestic violence advocacy, and personal healing. Operating from her lakeside studio in Wangi Wangi, New South Wales, Skye’s work creates space for introspection, creativity, and social commentary. Her unique approach blends abstract impressionism with diverse materials, inviting viewers to explore the nuanced layers of the human experience. Through her powerful art, she aims not only to express her own journey but to inspire others to find their voice and foster connection through creativity.

Skye earned a Fine Arts Diploma from TAFE NSW in 2004. Her early career involved an in-depth exploration of black-and-white photography, which led to mentorship under renowned darkroom expert Les Porter. As an exhibition photographer for the Wilderness Society, Skye developed a keen technical eye while also honing her skills in visual storytelling. The influence of this period is evident in the precision and emotive depth of her contemporary work.

For over a decade, Skye also founded and operated Skye Elizabeth Design, a successful paper craft business that garnered international attention. Her artistic versatility and commitment to community were apparent in her collaborations with organizations such as Red Cross, St. Phillips Christian College, and Westpac Helicopter. Through these ventures, she not only generated funds for charitable causes but also shared her expertise through workshops on photography, colour concepts, and paper craft techniques.

In 2020, Skye shifted her focus to full-time contemporary fine art, founding Art Side of the Moon. This new chapter marked a deepening of her artistic exploration, particularly in using visual art as a tool for social change. Her ongoing series, “The Lonely Chairs,” is a poignant domestic violence awareness project supported by the Awesome Foundation Lake Macquarie Seed Grant. The exhibition, set for auction in 2025 reflects her commitment to addressing personal and societal struggles through art.

Skye’s work has been featured in numerous prestigious exhibitions, both online and in physical galleries. Notable group shows include “Off the Wall Exhibition” at Lake Macquarie Museum of Art and Culture and “Out of the Mist – Reflections of Mental Health”, a touring exhibition through Townsville Gallery48 and One Arts Gallery, Gold Coast. She has also showcased her pieces in Las Laguna Gallery (2021) and the Contemporary Art Curator Magazine (2022). Her creative achievements have earned her multiple awards, including the Masterful Mind Award (Circle Foundation for the Arts, 2024), Artistic Excellence Award for her piece “Graffiti Girl” (2023), and the Visions of Tomorrow Award (2022).

Skye’s vision extends beyond the gallery space. She is deeply committed to community engagement, regularly participating in the Lake Mac Open Studios program and contributing to local art initiatives. Through her work, she encourages others to embrace their own creativity and use art as a means of personal expression and social change.
